Challenge: Curing Cancer with Proton Vision and Solution
Call it a tale of two cities, if you’re into cliches. The weather was rainy that day. The events – one loud, one quiet – foreshadowed the future of precision treatment for cancer.
In one city, population over 182,200, there was a celebratory atmosphere. The Provision Center for Proton Therapy was holding its official grand opening under a huge tent to keep out the elements. In keeping with the revival-like gathering, a ringing of the Victory Bell closed the ceremony in honor of cancer survivors.
In another city, population over 8,570, there was no celebration, no speeches, no applause, no ovations. That will come in 2010. But on this day earth-moving equipment lay idle as rain muddied the dirt where grading had started at the site where ProNova Solutions will rise in the foothills of the Great Smokies.
Events in Knoxville and Alcoa contrasted on Wednesday. But taken together – and it does package together – they symbolize a future to galvanize the economy of a region. Not-for-profit Provision and for-profit ProNova are the vision of Terry Douglass and his associates.
