Mental fitness as important as physical

By

In the last blog, we talked about staying physically healthy as you age. There are also our minds to think about—and healthy psychological aging is just as important as staying physically fit.

Our mental attitude has a far-reaching impact on our health. As we think, so follows our attitude. In other words, if we dwell on negatives, real or imagined, more negatives will be our focus. However, if we dwell on positives, we are more likely to see the good around us.

  1. Look for things to be grateful and thankful for. It is an affirmation of goodness that strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, makes us less bothered by aches and pains and feeling more alert, alive and awake. We all have something to be grateful for, whether it be for the sunshine, a flower, a kind word, a roof over our head or good food to eat. Resolve to find something each day and be grateful. Gratitude sets our heart on the positive, helping us become more helpful and more generous.
  2. Surround yourself with positive people, and laugh a lot. This increases the enjoyment of our day and helps us to avoid isolation and depression. When we are around negative people it can take a toll on our well being. Build lasting relationships that support and encourage one another.
  3. Keep your mind active. You may have retired from your job but that doesn’t mean that you don’t try to keep learning new things. If you are retired, stay involved in community activities. The more you read, do puzzles, problem solve, and play games that use your mind, the better off you’ll be.
  4. Spend less than you make and save. Poor financial health can cause a lot of stress. So, budgeting, investing and saving can help you be more secure in your financial future. This has positive affects emotionally, physically and on your social well-being.
  5. Care about others—family and friends. Volunteering where you can help others takes the focus off yourself and helps psychologically and spiritually. Prayer and meditation also have a tremendous impact on your well-being by reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, increasing happiness and improving sleep. Giving your worries and concerns to God lifts it from your shoulders to His. He is big enough to handle them.

I hope this helps as you think about aging gracefully by living a full and healthy lifestyle. How we live each day affects our health and well-being in the days to come! Remember, one life, one body, CARE for it! #CommitToFit!
