Many online blogs tell us the traditional 4th anniversary gift is flowers or fruit, but at Provision CARES Proton Therapy, we prefer cake! January 20th marks the 4th anniversary of operation for Provision CARES Proton Therapy Knoxville (PCPTK) providing the most innovative cancer treatment in the world, proton therapy.
Four years ago, the Knoxville proton center was the 13th center to open in the United States. Today, there are 27 operating proton therapy facilities in the United States, with over a dozen “under construction.” PCPTK treated the first 3 patients on January 20, 2014, with the most advanced form of radiation treatment available, proton therapy. Since the 1st treatment, Provision CARES Proton Therapy Knoxville has been a leader in innovation among the proton therapy world. Since opening, the proton center has treated over 60 disease sites; including, prostate, breast, head and neck, brain, lung, and pediatric cancers. Of the vast array of cancers treated, Provision CARES Proton Therapy treats more breast cancer patients than any other proton therapy center. Allowing breast cancer patients, a 50% reduction of clinically significant radiation dose to the heart. In the last four years, the center has utilized the most advanced platforms and resources through the Culture of Care to provide the highest quality of cancer care to all patients, receiving an overall 98% patient satisfaction score.
- PCPTK was the first proton therapy center to utilize RayStation for radiation treatment planning. RayStation allows Provision to bring the latest proton techniques to our patients. RayStation provides optimal treatment planning and efficiency for the proton center staff to provide and maintain the best quality of care and safety standards that impact treatment and patient outcomes.
- Provision CARES Proton Therapy was also the first to offer SpaceOAR® Hydrogel for prostate cancer patients. The SpaceOAR Hydrogel allows more protection from radiation exposure to healthy organs and tissues.
- Provision CARES Proton Therapy was the first radiation facility in the state of Tennessee to achieve certification of ASTRO’s Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx). The APEx certification process was an extensive and thorough evaluation of processes and procedures to assure the highest quality, safest care is provided to all patients.
Not only are we proud of our innovative achievements, we are proud of the many patients who have chosen proton therapy as their treatment option. In 2017, we celebrated our 1,000th patient graduation and are on track to quickly reach 2,000th within the next few months. The Provision Ambassador program consists of over 40% of our proton patients and family members who have decided to become advocates for proton therapy. Their proton therapy experiences are life changing to people who are searching for the right treatment option. To read more about our patients, visit www.protonstories.com.
