Prostate Cancer

Dale first heard about Provision CARES Proton Therapy through a TV commercial. Not knowing he had cancer, he tucked the words “proton therapy” in the back of his mind, hoping that he would never have to remember them. As fate would have it though, Dale would later find out he had prostate cancer, and thank goodness he remembered those two words.

“My mom always taught me to be proactive about my health,” Dale said.

He went in for regular checkups, yearly physicals, and was well aware of his PSA and gleason score. After one of his annual appointments, all the test scores came back normal, but Dale insisted on a biopsy, just to be sure. Both he and the doctor were shocked when the biopsy resultscame back positive. Dale was diagnosed with low risk, non-aggressive prostate cancer, so he decided to proceed with active surveillance.

Two and a half years later, things started to change. His PSA remained normal but his biopsy showed the cancer had doubled in size.

“It’s a miracle we found it,” said Dale. “I believe God placed the right doctors, urologists, and friends around me to help me make an informed treatment decision.”

He researched prostate cancer treatment options, including surgery, brachytherapy, and proton therapy. There were two things that played a very big role in his decision-making process:

  1. Cure Rate
  2. Quality of Life

Earlier in life, Dale was the head basketball coach at Carson-Newman University. After retiring from that post, he became the Vice President of Coaches’ Ministries for Nations of Coaches, an organization designed to provide values-based leadership coaching to college basketball teams and coaches. His goal in this ministry is to teach coaches how to motivate and inspire the heart of players and to help coaches understand the influence they have on their athletes.

With a career  that put him in the public eye and on the road quite often, he didn’t want to have a long, difficult recovery from treatment. He had heard the horror stories of side effects from other treatment options and was determined to continue traveling and mentoring athletes and coaches. With all that in mind, Dale proclaimed, “Proton was the obvious decision.”

“Provision has been a place not just for treatment, but a place to encourage others who are having treatment. I’ve been given the opportunity to be an encourager to others.” With a laugh he said, “It has, also, been a learning and humbling experience.”

There’s no question faith played a major role in Dale’s decision to choose treatment at Provision CARES Proton Therapy. While he was working with Provision’s hospitality staff to find lodging accommodations during treatment, other plans were being laid out for him instead. Thanks to a connection in the area, he was able to stay at a local church missionary house.

Even with though he was used to traveling often, it was still hard to be away from his wife and grandkids. He found comfort in the warm and welcoming Culture of Care Provision offers.

After completing treatment, Dale was eager to become an active Provision Proton Ambassador, hoping to educate others about proton therapy by sharing his own experience. In fact, he has some very wise words of advice for other cancer patients.

“As you consider all your treatment options, proton therapy should be included. Schedule a consult and sit down, listen, learn, and watch before making a final decision. You cannot undo a treatment decision.”
