Gynecologic Cancer

Proton Therapy Treatment for Gynecologic Cancer

Gynecologic cancer is any cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive organs.  There are several types of Gynecologic cancer including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar.

Proton therapy can help reduce the radiation dose to surrounding healthy tissues like the kidneys and bladder.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms are not the same for everyone and each gynecologic cancer has its own signs and symptoms.

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Feeling full too quickly or difficulty eating, bloating, and abdominal or back pain
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • More frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation
  • Itching, burning, pain, or tenderness of the vulva, and changes in vulva color or skin, such as a rash, sores, or warts

Diagnosis

Some gynecologic cancers can be diagnosed by Pap smear or a pelvic examination. A biopsy may be necessary for other cancer types. Blood test may also verify the presence of cancerous cells.

Treatment

Treatment for Gynecologic cancers can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. If you need radiation to treat your cancer, proton therapy provides a more precise radiation treatment which can minimize the radiation dose received to healthy tissues and nearby organs such as the rectum, pelvic bones, kidneys, bladder and bowels.
