Radiation Oncologist, Medical Director Provision CARES Proton Therapy Knoxville

A board-certified radiation oncologist, Dr. Ben Wilkinson is the medical director of Provision CARES Proton Therapy and a physician with Particle Therapy Medical Group in Knoxville, TN.  Dr. Wilkinson joined Provision from Willis-Knighton Cancer and Proton Therapy Center in Louisiana, where he was one of the first physicians to work with IBA’s ProteusOne proton therapy system.  During this time, he served as an assistant professor of radiation oncology for LSU School of Medicine where he taught medical students, residents and fellows.

Dr. Wilkinson graduated from Texas Christian University and Texas A&M College of Medicine. Following his residency training at University of Maryland and William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, he received specialized training in proton beam therapy at University of Pennsylvania and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.

One of the focuses of his medical practice is clinical research as he has authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, and book chapters.  Dr. Wilkinson helped open the PCORI proton therapy trial at the first clinical site in the country and was a member of the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) in the Gulf States region.  Dr. Wilkinson has presented his research at multiple scientific meetings including Particle Therapy Cooperative Group (PTCOG), ASTRO, ACRO, and the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS).  He is currently serving as the 2019-2020 Vice Chair, American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Communications Committee; as well as the 2019 Co-Chair, American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Membership Committee.  Dr. Wilkinson is committed to community outreach and was named a More Than Pink Hero by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  He is a board member for Radiating Hope, a non-profit that provides radiation treatment equipment to developing countries including Panama, Senegal, and Nepal.

Dr. Wilkinson came to Provision because of its reputation as an exceptional cancer treatment center, as well as a developer of next-generation proton therapy equipment, the ProNova system. At Provision CARES Proton Therapy Knoxville, Dr. Wilkinson’s clinical focus includes treatment of prostate, breast, and lung cancers, as well as brain tumors and pediatric malignancies.
