James Zhu, MD PhD
Dr. Zhu is a radiation oncologist at Provision CARES Proton Therapy Nashville. While skilled in all modern radiation modalities, he specializes in proton therapy for a broad range of malignancies. As a patient advocate, Dr. Zhu is dedicated to personalized cancer care which integrates and tailors cutting-edge technologies in cancer medicine including proton radiation to best meet individual patient’s needs.
Dr. Zhu’s interest in bringing the newest medical technology to cancer patients stems from his extensive engineering and medical background: he majored in electrical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, and then finished his PhD in biomedical engineering. Dr. Zhu received his medical education at the University of California in San Diego. Since his early days of medical school training, he wanted to bring his passion in patient care and technology together. A career in radiation oncology fulfilled his passion.
During his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Florida, Dr. Zhu went through rigorous training to use proton therapy as an integral part of the residency curriculum. As an established researcher, his work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed medical and engineering journals and presented at many national and international conferences. He was a chief resident and honored with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Roentgen Resident Research Award.
Dr. Zhu joined the team at Provision CARES Proton Therapy Nashville because of its vision to bring exceptional cancer treatment to local communities with its new proton technology and patient-centered, evidence-based practice. Dr. Zhu has a broad based practice at Provision that includes prostate, breast, lung, head and neck, lymphoma, adult CNS and other intrathoracic or abdominal malignancies.
Outside his work, Dr. Zhu spends time with his wife hiking, biking, and traveling, and is always attracted to good local food. He is fluent in medical Chinese.
