Robert Lavey, MD, MPH

Radiation Oncologist

Robert S. Lavey, M.D., M.P.H. has been board-certified in Radiation Oncology since 1988.  He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and earned his Doctorate in Medicine from Stanford University. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at Duke University and was awarded National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Stanford University Department of Medicine and the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.

Over a 24-year academic career, Dr. Lavey was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Associate Professor at the University of Southern California (USC), full professor at the University of South Florida (USF), and a Senior Member of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.  During nine of those years, he was a Distinguished Scientific Advisor to the Radiological Society of North America.  Prior to joining Provision CARES, Dr. Lavey was the Medical Director of the Maurer Family Cancer Center in Ohio. In addition to his vast experience treating all types of adult cancers, Dr. Lavey is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric malignancies.  He headed the radiation oncology programs at major children’s hospitals in both Florida and California.

Dr. Lavey has advanced the treatment of cancer as the Principal Investigator or Radiation Oncology Coordinator of 15 internationally conducted clinical trials sponsored by the United States National Cancer Institute (NCI).  He held leadership roles in three NCI-funded international cooperative clinical trial groups.  He has written 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles in medical journals and 24 chapters in oncology textbooks.  He has served as the President, then Chairman of the Board, of the Los Angeles Radiological Society, on the Executive Committee of the Southern California Radiation Oncology Society, and a Committee Chair for the American Society of Radiation Oncology.  He has been an invited lecturer at international oncology meetings and/or guest professor at renowned universities in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, and Asia.

Dr. Lavey is passionate about serving and educating the community to decrease the chance of developing cancer, to improve care, and ease the journey during and after treatment.  He is a member of the regional Board of Directors and Volunteer Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society.  He has also been Treasurer and on the Board of Directors of Padres Contra El Cancer, focusing on the needs of the Hispanic community.

Dr. Lavey and his wife Mary Ellen, an environmental and occupational health and safety attorney, have raised their three children to adulthood and (near) self-reliance.  Only their dog remains homebound and completely dependent upon them.  They are steeped in their faith, admirers of the arts, and supporters of live theater.  They especially enjoy exploring nature’s beauty and humanity’s creations throughout our marvelous world.  Multiple accidents have not dampened Dr. Lavey’s enthusiasm for bicycling and skiing.  Dr. Lavey enjoys reading and learning about human history – tales of how people respond to challenge, adversity, and opportunity.  He relishes growing fruits and vegetables, then eating what Mary Ellen makes from them.
